The idea of eating or touching something like yogurt, peanut butter or apple sauce is totally repulsive to her... Yet amazingly, she is very happy swirling & blending colors on canvas! But have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They're banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we've seen in decades. I'd like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 265px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__MQu7RISPUQ/SYDeXeqIcUI/AAAAAAAABM8/KIHN1suj1Qw/s400/CPSIA.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296477656735838530" />
Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it.

The CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real. View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too.

How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:

To the Parents of Young Students:
Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. While those paper clips weren't originally intended for your student to use, they will need to be tested now that your 11-year-old needs them for his school project. This law applies to any and all school supplies (textbooks, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) being used by children under 12.

To the Avid Reader:
Due to the new law, all children's books will be pulled from library and school shelves, as there is no exemption for them. That’s okay though, there's always television. Our children don’t need to learn the love of reading after all.
Article from the American Library Association http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/?p=1322

To the Lover of All Things Handmade:
Due to the new law, you will now be given a cotton ball and an instruction manual so you can make it yourself since that blanket you originally had your eye on for $50 will now cost you around $1,000 after it's passed testing. It won't even be the one-of-a-kind blanket you were hoping for. Items are destroyed in the testing process making one-of-a-kind items virtually impossible. So that gorgeous hand-knit hat you bought your child this past winter won’t be available next winter.

To the Environmentalist:
Due to the new law, all items in non-compliance will now be dumped into our already overflowing landfills. Imagine not just products from the small business owners, but the Big Box Stores as well. You can't sell it so you must toss it. Or be potentially sued for selling it. You can't even give them away. If you are caught, it is still a violation.

To the Second-Hand Shopper:
Due to the new law, you will now need to spend $20 for that brand new pair of jeans for your 2-year old, rather than shop at the Goodwill for second hand. Many resale shops are eliminating children's items all together to avoid future lawsuits.

To the Entrepreneur:
Due to this new law, you will be forced to adhere to strict testing of your unique products or discontinue to make and/or sell them. Small businesses will be likely to be unable to afford the cost of testing and be forced to close up shop. Due to the current economic state, you'll have to hope for the best when it comes to finding a new job in Corporate America.

To the Antique Toy Collector:
Due to the new law, you'd better start buying now because it's all going to private collection and will no longer be available to purchase. “Because the new rules apply retroactively, toys and clothes already on the shelf will have to be thrown out if they aren't certified as safe.” http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123189645948879745.html

To the American Economy:
Already struggling under an economy that hasn’t been this weak in decades, the American economy will be hit harder with the inevitable loss of jobs and revenues from suppliers, small businesses and consumers. The required testing is far too costly and restrictive for small businesses or individuals to undertake.

To the Worldwide Economy:
Due to this new law, many foreign manufacturers have already pulled out of the US market. You can imagine the impact of this on their businesses.

If you think this is exaggerating, here is a recent article from Forbes
http://www.forbes.com/2009/01/16/cpsia-safety-toys-oped-cx_wo_0116olson.html

And for those of you prepared to be stupefied and boggled, The New Law
http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/cpsia.html

<img src="http://blog.buyhandmade.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/save125.gif" alt="Save Handmade! The Santa visit meltdown, the photo card disaster, he’s taking all his clothes off, and he’s pulling down the freakin Christmas tree!

I also found this poem written and posted on youtube by Donna, writer and owner of the Donna Williams blog - Ever the Arty Autie.

From the blog Fragile What?! I found a post titled Autism Christmas Letter -
“Dear Family and Friends:” This was written for the purpose of it being sent to relatives, friends, and hosts of holiday gatherings that might need a crash course in what to expect from their guest with autism. This letter is written as if the autistic individual person is writing it personally.
Dear Family and Friends:

I understand that we will be visiting each other for the holidays this year! Sometimes these visits can be very hard for me, but here is some information that might help our visit to be more successful. As you probably know, a hidden disability called autism, or what some people refer to as a Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), challenges me. Autism/PDD is a neurodevelopment disorder, which makes it hard for me to understand the environment around me. I have barriers in my brain that you can’t see, but which make it difficult for me to adapt to my surroundings.
Thanksgiving & Christmas is one of the roughest holidays for me. With large crowds and holiday shopping it can be very overwhelming, even a bit scary. When planning a party remember that with my over sensitive hearing and eye sight, Christmas trees and holiday smells can cause me mild to severe pain or discomfort. If the noises are impossible to control a personal stereo with headphones set to a safe level for children may help drown out background noise and ease my discomfort.
Sometimes I may seem rude and abrupt, but it is only that because I have to try so hard to understand people and at the same time, make myself understood. People with autism have different abilities: some may not speak, some write beautiful poetry, others are whizzes in math (Albert Einstein was thought to be autistic), or may have difficulty making friends. We are all different and need various degrees of support.
Sometimes when I am touched unexpectedly, it might feel painful and make me want to run away. I get easily frustrated too. Being with lots of other people is like standing next to a moving freight train and trying to decide how and when to jump aboard. I feel frightened and confused a lot of the time. This is why I need to have things the same as much as possible. Once I learn how things happen, I can get by OK. But if something, anything, changes, then I have to relearn the situation all over again! It is very hard.
When you try to talk to me, I often can’t understand what you say because there is a lot of distraction around. I have to concentrate very hard to hear and understand one thing at a time. You might think I am ignoring you-I am not. Rather, I am hearing everything and not knowing what is most important to respond to.
Holidays are exceptionally hard because there are so many different people, places, and things going on that are out of my ordinary realm. This may be fun and adventurous for most people, but for me, it’s very hard work and can be extremely stressful. I often have to get away from all the commotion to calm down. It would be great if you had a private place set up to where I could retreat.
If I cannot sit at the meal table, do not think I am misbehaving or that my parents have no control over me. Sitting in one place for even five minutes is often impossible for me. I feel so antsy and overwhelmed by all the smells, sounds, and people–I just have to get up and move about. Please don’t hold up your meal for me–go on without me, and my parents will handle the situation the best way they know how.
Eating in general is hard for me. If you understand that autism is a sensory processing disorder, it’s no wonder eating is a problem! Think of all the senses involved with eating. Sight, smell, taste, touch, AND all the complicated mechanics that are involved. Chewing and swallowing is something that a lot of people with autism have trouble with. I am not being picky-I literally cannot eat certain foods as my sensory system and/or oral motor coordination is impaired. Don’t be disappointed if Mom hasn’t dressed me in starch and bows. It’s because she knows how much stiff and frilly clothes can drive me buggy! I have to feel comfortable in my clothes or I will just be miserable. When I go to someone else’s house, I may appear bossy and controlling. In a sense, I am being controlling, because that is how I try to fit into the world around me (which is so hard to figure out!) Things have to be done in a way I am familiar with or else I might get confused and frustrated. It doesn’t mean you have to change the way you are doing things–just please be patient with me, and understanding of how I have to cope. Mom and Dad have no control over how my autism makes me feel inside. People with autism often have little things that they do to help themselves feel more comfortable. The grown ups call it “self regulation,” or “stimming’. I might rock, hum, flick my fingers, or any number of different things. I am not trying to be disruptive or weird. Again, I am doing what I have to do for my brain to adapt to your world. Sometimes I cannot stop myself from talking, singing, or doing an activity I enjoy. The grown-ups call this “perseverating” which is kind-a-like self- regulation or stimming. I do this only because I have found something to occupy myself that makes me feel comfortable. Perseverative behaviors are good to a certain degree because they help me calm down.
Please be respectful to my Mom and Dad if they let me “stim” for a while as they know me best and what helps to calm me. Remember that my Mom and Dad have to watch me much more closely than the average child. This is for my own safety, and preservation of your possessions. It hurts my parents’ feelings to be criticized for being over protective, or condemned for not watching me close enough. They are human and have been given an assignment intended for saints. My parents are good people and need your support.
Holidays are filled with sights, sounds, and smells. The average household is turned into a busy, frantic, festive place. Remember that this may be fun for you, but it’s very hard work for me to conform. If I fall apart or act out in a way that you consider socially inappropriate, please remember that I don’t possess the neurological system that is required to follow some social rules. I am a unique person–an interesting person. Deb Dockery) in the hopes of helping families affected by autism & related disorders. Our mission statement is “Autism Education…One Person At A Time”. We take simple programs (like Art for Autism) and help build children’s coordination, social skills, and self esteem.

One day, we hope to open a home for adults on the spectrum, privately funded. With 1 in 150 children having been diagnosed with autism (our oldest son being one of them), these children will need to live somewhere when they become of age. The government will not be able to handle the influx of additional “bodies” into the system. These people have to live somewhere. We hope to have the funding in place to house some in Northern Mississippi, in a safe, loving environment. In 2006, you started a program called Art for Autism. What is the program, how is it designed, and who is eligible?Art for Autism is simply that. An art program developed for children on the autism spectrum. We have many different projects designed to have fun & help children with their social skills. He have projects like recycle art (making a robot out of aluminum foil, boxes, cans, and other household items), shaving cream art (the squishing of the shaving cream is a sensory activity), tissue paper “stained glass” art (the kids love to shred & tear the tissue paper), etc.We look for art projects that art “mainstream” but will help with their sensory issues, and give them some physical therapy (writing, gripping, cutting).

It is normally a 3 or 4 week program (Saturday mornings). It is open to all children who have a diagnosis of autism. Applications are posted on our website or are available through our local school system. On our application, we ask parents for a diagnosis and percentage of independence (if a child normally works with an aide, etc.) The Dockery Foundation hires behavioral techs to work with the profoundly affected children to assist them, guide them with their tasks, as they would in school. With the most independent children, we pair them with peer volunteers or a table of children like themselves. Sometimes, the tables are indistinguishable.

Any child living in the Memphis/Mid-South area with autism or a related disorder is eligible for the Dockery Foundation’s programs, including Art for Autism. There is no charge for our programs. We are a not for profit 501 (c) 3.

How did you discover how your son Chase was helped by art?
In 2002, we were living in South Florida. Chase was having problems making friends. He didn’t like school. Typical for children with autism. However, he LOVED art. So, we enrolled him in a community art class. He seemed to gain confidence every time he attended this class.

He also enjoyed drawing (what we called) picture books. He would draw page after page of cartoons…Winnie the Pooh, Sponge Bob, whatever his favorite characters were at the time. Then, proceed to tell us a story. No words, just drawings. His imagination was incredible! It seemed to help him become more verbal, too.

Have you researched art therapy?
Per se, no. I’m a mom. I have no specialty or advanced degree in art therapy.

However, one of our board members, Dr. Sheila Williamson (clinical psychologist with our local school system) has researched what techniques work for children on the spectrum. Dr. Sheila has helped apply those techniques to our Art for Autism program. Whether it be squishing a bag of shaving cream or brushing a feather, Dr. Sheila helps us put together a curriculum that helps our children with physical therapy.

What have you learned that you have been able to apply to working with your son?
Actually, with all children that we work with. Most children LOVE art. Some of our kids are gifted (a savant skill, even). Most are not. However, The Dockery Foundation has a place for all of our children. We focus on social skills and helping children with autism learn whatever they can about art. From painting to drawing a straight line. Maybe holding a crayon correctly for the very first time. We work with all skill sets.

Our son has learned much from Art for Autism. His art skills are excellent. Those skills he brought to the program. What he has learned in Art for Autism is how to help others. To share. And to feel comfortable around other children. That is the beauty of our program!

What prompted you to reach beyond your own family and into a larger autism community?Wow…good question. Well, I was sitting in the same chair that I am now. I was talking to my husband and complaining about the lack of services for our kids. Especially an art program for our Chase. My husband said, “stop complaining, and let’s do something about it!”

Well, we did. Art for Autism began successfully in 2007 with 10 children on the autism spectrum, and just as many helpers. This year, we grew by 200%. In January, we look to grow again exponentially!

What are your plans for the Dockery Foundation?
Do you have all day? Seriously. We have many plans. Short term: continued growth with our Art for Autism program, our Move for Autism soccer program. And we’re looking at a couple of other programs to help children in our community. We also have quarterly workshops for our community, so we will continue those.

Mid term: working with other special needs groups in our area. There is a huge need for job training! Someone needs to step up and help our families. So many bright, intelligent teens end up underemployed (or unemployed) that could end up with full time jobs in our community. So, that is next.

Long term: As I said earlier, addressing long term housing issues. Ideally, we would like to find land for a ranch for some of our families. We understand that it will take a lot of money. We cannot look to the government to address these issues for us. Housing won’t be available to so many of these children when they become adults. They are (as we have been told) “too high functioning”, but they can’t make it out on their own, without coaching. So, what happens to these adults? Organizations like ours need to fill in the gaps. We need to find housing and coach them on life skills.

What can people do to help your foundation?
Locally, volunteer! We would love to have folks help us. It would be wonderful! [Please contact us at:] info@dockeryfoundation.org. And, we would gladly accept donations at http://dockeryfoundation.org.

What have you, personally, learned in this journey with your son's autism?
My husband says it best. “If you don’t learn anything from these children, then you aren’t paying attention.” That is so true.

Both of my boys. I am so blessed by them both. My youngest son, Dylan has to play the role of “big brother.” I watch him with so much pride (hang on…getting teary eyed..) He’s so protective of his big brother.

We have become a FAMILY. The Dockery Foundation events…Art for Autism, Move for Autism, our workshops, anything that we do, we do as a FAMILY. Autism affects the family. We could make this a downer, but we refuse to! We have fun things to do TOGETHER! And we have made the most wonderful friends through autism. I refer to them as our “autism family”. In fact, this afternoon we are having an early Thanksgiving dinner with part of our “autism family”. We wouldn’t have the friends that we do, had it not been for autism. The church friends that we do. The faith that we do. The determination. The love. The compassion. The family love for each other.

If there is a mom or dad reading this and your child is newly diagnosed, understand this. It does get better. I promise! Reach out to others. They will reach back.

Tim Sharp "Laser Beak Man"

Some of our readers may know that I'm only days away from a fundraiser Masquerade Dinner called Behind The Mask of Autism. We are raising funds for three severely autistic children, one of them being my daughter. The night is shaping up to be a fabulous one with a scrumptious three course meal, live band, celebrity MC's and a fun silent and loud auction with heaps of wonderful items that have been donated to us from all kids of people and places like restaurant vouchers, jewelry, sports memorabilia, home wares, limited edition books, art works and even a years supply of chocolates!!
This is the bit I wanted to share with you - one of our kind donors is a very talented and internationally known, award winning artist diagnosed with Autism, Tim Sharp.

This is Tim's Story:
"At only 20 years of age, Tim Sharp has not allowed Autism to prevent him from achieving so much in his young life. Tim’s inspiring story has been documented on the ABC’s Australian Story and immortalised in the Eternity exhibition at The National Museum of Australia, his art has been exhibited at the Sydney Opera House, Washington DC and New York, and his work is sold to collectors throughout Australia and around the world, including London, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC and Hong Kong. Tim has twice been nominated as a Queensland finalist for Young Australian of the Year, and incredibly has overcome an initial prognosis at age 4 that the best thing that could be done would be to “put him away and forget about him”. That he would never talk, go to school or have any quality of life.
At age 16, Tim was the only Australian selected by jury in the young adult drawing category for the VSA (Very Special Arts) Festival in Washington DC. Australian Story (ABC) told the story of Tim’s trip to Washington DC and won awards for that story. At the festival Tim carried the Australian Flag into the opening ceremony at the John F Kennedy Performing Arts Centre and later met with John F. Kennedy’s sister Jean Kennedy-Smith who founded VSA arts 30 years ago.

Tim’s art features the adventures of the colourful super hero Laser Beak Man, who he invented when he was 11 years old. Fans include Wayne Bennett, Ms Quentin Bryce the Governor General, Ken Done, Alex Perry, Alan Jones, The Wiggles and his latest exhibition in Brisbane was opened by Ms Anna Bligh Premier of Queensland. Now in its third year Tim has a touring exhibition with the Queensland Arts Council, he is the youngest person they have ever toured and also the first with a disability. He also has his own range of Laser Beak Man t shirts and a book.

Tim is a delightful, polite young man who is an inspiration to many. Art allows him to enjoy some of the things he wants most in life, a happy smile and friendship. The future is quite limited for Tim, he will always require full time care and support but Laser Beak Man is helping him to build a brighter future for himself and step outside the loneliness of Autism".

On the night of our fundraiser both the pictured pieces of Tim's art are up for auction. Half the takings of the winning bid will to the three children the night is in aid of and the other half will go to Tim. Thank you Tim!!
You can read more about Tim and see much more of his great artworks on his website www.laserbeakman.com

Feature-less

Sorry, folks, but we don't have a featured artist this week. Shooting digitally is such a pleasure, and I love to fiddle with things in Photoshop. The kaleidoscope thing was almost an accident. I admired prints of someone else's work in miniature (they were ATCs - artist trading cards) and she told me how she did it. I looked for a similar program for the Mac, and didn't find any. Then some friends showed me prints they'd purchased at an art fair, which made me search some more and this time I found something that was Macintosh compatible. I spent hours that first day, playing with archived photos! How long have you been taking photos?
On and off since my first Instamatic 110 in 4th grade. They take an image, break it with reflections on reflections, and make a new pattern. My kaleidoscoped photos take one piece of a much larger image, reflect, mirror, distort and recreate a whole new, sometimes unrecognizable image. People can also learn more at ShatteredPhotos.com.

What is your favorite candy bar; why?
Butterfinger if I want something supersweet, or Payday when I want something saltier. It intrigued me that glass could be melted together and even bent using heat. I bought a kiln and started making plates and bowls and many vases, too. They were popular, but I couldn't sell enough to make a living so I began trying my hand at jewelry. I wanted to make something unique so I tried etching drawings on dichroic glass. I had many failures, but finally mastered it and began selling them on Ebay. After a year or so I started using a special paint on the glass and it opened up a new world for me. Everything could be in color now and the designs were endless.
With a special glass saw I can now cut and shape the glass into cats, puzzle pieces, spirals, etc. I sell mostly on Ebay, but make a lot of special orders, too. Here's my address on Ebay: http://stores.ebay.com/Dichroic-Art-Jewelry-by-Dave.

How long have you been working with glass?
About five years and I now do this full time.

Have you had any training?
I haven't had any formal training, but I've done lots of research at the library and on the internet.
What is one of the biggest lessons you have learned through your art and selling it?
I have learned to never give up if you think you can do something. I love everything that sparkles and always use the highest quality crystals and findings."

Tell us all about yourself and your craft?
I'm a FL native currently living in AZ. I've been married for almost 12 years and have 2 boys, ages 5 and 1. I'm a former professional cake decorator and would love to one day have a bakery/bead shop. Messy, but fun!

How long have you been creating your craft?
I come from a big southern family and I remember as young as 6, I would sit at my Grandmother's big dining room table with a bunch of my Aunts and Cousins and bead. We had great craft stores in the area and we would get those big spools of gold stretchy cord and plastic beads and just be in heaven! I learned how to create "real" jewelry 5 years ago from my former boss.

What is one of the biggest lesson you have learnt about your craft & selling it?
Patience. The jewelry market is so saturated that no matter what you do, you need a lot of patience.

Which of your items did you have the most fun creating & why?
My new Halloween scrabble tile pendants. I know they're everywhere, but I have a store in town that commisioned a special design for wholesale, so I had a bunch left over, and I have an absolute passion for Halloween!

Do you have any training in your craft?
I wish! I was just accepted to the metalsmithing program here in Phoenix when I was 7 months pregnant. So, it didn't happen. But hopefully one day.

What is your favourite candy bar & why?
Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. I have always loved the chocolate/peanut butter combination. I ordered them fresh from the factory one time and actually ate the entire jar in 2 days! If you haven't tried that yet, go to the Hershey website, it is SO worth it.

If money, responsibilities, and time were no issues where in the great wide world would you go & why?
I would go to England because I am absolutely fascinated with everything British. I don't know why, I just am! My husband and I want to retire on one of those narrow boats and have a country cottage.

Weekly Featured Artist - Mandi of shulamite

This weeks 'Featured Artist' is the talented Mandi of shulamite, Mandi writes in her shop profile "We aim to produce unique, deluxe designs that you wouldn't be able to find at your average local mall, and we hope you like our style!" and you can be sure of that. Take a look through the great selection of Mandi's items at www.shulamite.etsy.com.

Tell us all about yourself and your craft?
shulamite is a combined craft project by myself, Mandi Apple Collingridge (36) and my mom, Pauline Tweedy (60), both stay-at-home moms. It really started out a couple of years ago when I became interested in sewing, but I was a complete newbie, so we began to work together, with me learning her long-term seamstressing skills directly from her.

Because of my interest in Asian culture (I also run a website, Snowblood Apple (http://www.snowbloodapple.com) specialising in reviews of East Asian cult "extreme" movies), much of what we create is highly influenced by the arts and crafts of Asia. I've taught myself how to sew sashiko (Japanese traditional quilt embroidering style), and we use a lot of Asian materials, such as vintage kimono and obi silks.

Also, due to my deep love of Japanese street fashion (mostly wearing gothic lolita or himegyaru on an everyday basis), a great deal of our work is Victoriana and lolita-influenced. Most of our work is a kind of fusion between traditional Japanese crafts, modern Japanese street style and Victorian fashion and elements.

How long have you been creating your craft?
I am a relative newcomer to sewing and crafting - I started only a couple of years ago. My mom has been a seamstress all of her life and always made me beautiful clothes when I was a little girl, I wish I could persuade her to make me some more now! Her mother was a professional seamstress, and so these skills have been passed down through the womenfolk of our family for several generations.

I certainly intend to teach whatever I've learned to my daughter - she's only 4 at the time of writing this interview, so I will have to wait a bit for that!

What is one of the biggest lesson you have learnt about your craft & selling it?
I'm learning that you never stop learning your craft! I have also learned that creating something constructive and wearable that you find beautiful is one of the most satisfying feelings on earth!
As for selling our work, I never think about that element: I just hope that people enjoy our creations as much as we enjoy creating them!

Which of your items did you have the most fun creating & why?
I don't think I can personally single out one item to be honest! I love making the Japanese/Victorian kimono silk cuffs best because I'm a total fabric-o-holic, I adore searching for gorgeous vintage and antique silks and laces and I always end up buying the best I can find and spending way too much money on them *lol*

Do you have any training in your craft?
Only from my mom and also my mother-in-law, who has a degree in fine art and textiles, and who was formerly an art teacher. She has taught me so much about creative embroidery and so many techniques and skills, it's been amazing to learn from two incredibly talented women.

Is there a basic ‘household’ item you use when creating that seems to work just as good if not better than the actual ‘tool’?
Can't think of anything, sorry! I guess with sewing you don't really have much choice but to use a needle and thread *lol*

What is your favourite candy bar & why?
My all-time favourite is Fry's Turkish Delight. Can you get that in the US? It is seriously yummy! [Ed. - you can find it in the US at World Market stores.]

If money, responsibilities, and time were no issues where in the great wide world would you go & why?
Hmmm, good question! I would love one day to go back to Iceland - it is such a stunningly beautiful country, the landscape is breathtakingly beautiful and the people are so friendly, it is such a unique place to visit - I originally went there on my honeymoon! (Yes, I know it's a strange venue for a honeymoon but my husband doesn't like hot weather *lol*)

Puzzle Facts

DID YOU KNOW:

<img style="display:block; She encouraged me to do what I loved to do and to chase after my dreams. When we met I had not created any artwork since high school, and a lot of my friends had no idea I was so creative with the arts.

I purchased a 36” x 48” canvas and painted a few sunflowers on it in a small apartment Lynda and I shared, I wanted to show off my ability to paint. That was the first piece of artwork I had create in almost a decade. Lynda immediately fell in love with the artwork and suggested that I do more of it. I have not looked back since. I paint canvases as if I was to hang in them on the walls in our house but since I paint every chance I get, I decided I would need to sell them versus giving them away. So shortly after painting the sunflower painting, I purchased about $200.00 worth of art supplies and the rest is history.

How long have you been painting?
I took every art class I could in high school because I loved created art and working with my hands. In college I studied Criminal Justice and then accepted a position in Information Technology with Allstate Insurance Company.

I have painted almost every week for the past 5 years since the “Sunflower” painting, which my wife still has in our living room. Lynda states “the “Sunflower” painting will never be for sale.”

Have you had any training?
I guess you could say the classes I took in high school were training, by Ms. Blomberg. I owe the credit for what skills I do have to her. I have since taken a few design courses at a local community college but have not received a degree in the arts.

What is one of the biggest lessons you have learned through your art and selling it?
• The biggest form of disappointment is to depend on others.
• If you do not know how to do something, then find a way to teach yourself how it’s done.
• Good things happen; if you put in the time, and trust in God.

You donate to the Blue Ridge Autism Center. Where is it, when is it, and are you still accepting donations and artists' works?
Four years ago in 2004 my wife and I decided to that we needed to get exposure for my artwork and to help raise awareness of emerging artists in Roanoke, Va. We decided to have an art show and call it the “Unknown Artist Show.” We decided to have a weekend exhibit down in the city of Roanoke, VA. We went downtown and tried to find buildings that were empty, being leased, and where a good enough location where we could have an art show. Our first art show had 5 artists, free food, free music and over 300 people attend. Since the first show was such a success we decided to do another, and now we are in our 4th year with the art show. Since we were able to get so many people to attend our art show we decided to help not only emerging artists but help bring awareness to autism.

Last year at the 3rd annual “Unknown Artist Show” we had tables full of donated silent auction items from people and business. We were able to raise $5000.00 dollars for [the] non profit [...] Blue Ridge Autism Center.

This year the show is on Monday December the 1st at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke Va.

We will accept any and all donations, silent auction items, and volunteers for the show. Many artists have donated some of their artwork to be auctioned off in the silent auction and we would love to have more. We auction off anything that is donated to us no matter how big or small. Please help us with raising awareness for autism by donating silent auctions [items] for our show in December.

What is your favorite candy bar; why?
A frozen Snickers! This is why I thought I'd write a quick post showing and explaining the story behind the ribbon.

I did a little Google searching in 'research' for this post and came across a great website run by Cher - a mum who's son, Jonathon, has been diagnosed with Autism - the website has all kinds of links to treatments and information, Jonathon Story and even a page dedicated to Jonathon's grandma's point of view! On here I also found a page of clip art and graphics that Cher has done up for use on blogs, websites, anywhere all about autism which is where I found the above picture - The perfect thing for this post!! - It reads "The Autism Awareness Ribbon - The puzzle pattern of the ribbon reflects the mystery and complexity of Autism. The different colors and shapes represents the diversity of people and families living with the disorder. The brightness of the ribbon signals hope - hope through research and increasing awareness in people like you."

Weekly Featured Artist - Amy of Giggleberry Creations

This week our featured artist is - Me, Amy the co-author of this great blog and driving force behind Giggleberry Creations! I have a wonderful, gorgeous, sexy, loving husband and two special girls. My beautiful 10 month old Milla and my, full of energy, 7 year old step daughter Felicity, who is autistic - it's a girly household! We are also pregnant and expecting a new addition to the family in February.

I have Felicity with me on Thursday afternoons, all day Fridays and weekends - implementing her play based therapy another great outlet for my energy. The rest of the week I spend juggling Milla and Giggleberry. Giggleberry is my online business hand making and selling fabric pennant strings or bunting as they are known in Australia. These are a fun and easy way to add color and character to your little one's nursery, bedroom, cubby hose, play area or maybe even for your craft show tent??

I love doing anything that involves my little family, being creative on the sewing machine and getting in and 'getting things done'!

How long have you been creating your craft?
I have always enjoyed sewing but started making my banners early this year. I made the first set for my daughter just after she was born to decorate her bedroom then made sets for friends, nieces, nephews, neighbors etc before I found etsy and began selling them in April this year.

What is one of the biggest lesson you have learnt about your craft & selling it?
Enjoy it!! If you don't enjoy what ever it is you do I believe you won't stick to it or do as good a job as someone who loves it!

Which of your items did you have the most fun creating & why?
I loved making the set of flags for my daughters room. My mum has a tradition of making a quilt for all her grandkids before they are born for their cots so when she was finished I asked for the left over fabric and from that I made Milla her own set of flags to hang above her cot.
At the moment I am making a gorgeous set out of Autism Awareness puzzle print fabric to use for decoration at a fundraiser we are having for Felicity - it's such a fun and bright set you can't help but enjoy making it!

Do you have any training in your craft?
Training..... I wouldn't say 'professional training' but when I was a little girl my mum would let my sisters and I sew with her sewing machine with paper and no cotton until we got the hang of it then we were able to sew for 'real'. I also enjoyed my textiles classes in early high school and loved the big end of year project we had to make something amazing for.

Is there a basic ‘household’ item you use when creating that seems to work just as good if not better than the actual ‘tool’?
Sure is, I use a chopstick for poking the corners out on my flags. It seems to be the perfect size and it works so well!

What is your favorite candy bar & why?
Above all a Mars Bar - straight from the fridge! I love them.

If money, responsibilities, and time were no issues where in the great wide world would you go & why?
Oh the choices....... I could go so many places I have been lucky enough (pre kids) to travel to Africa, Switzerland, Prague, China, USA, London, Malaysia and out of those Switzerland and Africa I would go back to in a heart beat but at the same time there are so many places I haven't been to yet too!! Although New York City was where my hubby proposed so I will always have a soft spot for that great city.

Weekly Featured Artist - Erenia of both Crimson Sea Dragon & The Lippy Lop Shop

This week we are featuring Erenia who has two shops with etsy, Crimson Sea Dragon and The Lippy Lop Shop where she sells all kinds of fabulous things like jewelry, decor, paintings, toys, purses and so much more!!

Sales from selected items from The Lippy Lop Shop will be donated to a charity to benefit Autism.

Tell us all about yourself and your art/craft?
I craft on all levels. Ideas just burst from my mind and shoot out through my hands. I make clothing, jewelry, toys, accessories, and mixed media art sculptures. Pretty much I am a complete weirdo (as my sister Ruby would say). I love family time, road trips, good music, trying foods from around the world, and extreme sports.

How long have you been creating your art/craft?
I believe I was born creating. I would play in the yard all by myself. I would pick plants and flowers and make things with the natural elements around me. Sometimes I would make these multi-layered mud pies and decorate them with flowers, twigs, and leaves. That pretty much fueled my mind to create many other things. I was bout 3 when I did the mud pies.

What is one of the biggest lesson you have learned about your art/craft & selling it?
People will compliment your creations but won't take you serious if you are under priced. It has a tree made of wire and little findings that represent pieces of me dangling from the branches. It's in a wooden box with two Plexiglas sides to see the tree. The outside is painted green to show that I have achieved balance in my life, and some I painted Mehendi tattoos all over the box because the are of Henna tattoos is beautiful and shows a side of me that others can't see with their eyes.

Do you have any training in your craft?
Well, I come from a very crafty family. My gramps is 107 years old and he just recently gave up his craft cause he is too tired, but I learned from him and many others, so yes I have had training.

Is there a basic ‘household’ item you use when creating that seems to work just as good if not better than the actual ‘tool’?
Ok here is my confession. I usually don't use tools when I am crafting. I just grab whatever I can find and use it. Sometimes a butter knife works better than a scraper. Sometimes I don't even know what some tools are called cause I rarely use them, whatever works!

What is your favorite candy bar & why?
Caramelo, it has the gooiest caramel inside, of course!

If money, responsibilities, and time were no issues where in the great wide world would you go & why?
Back to Europe. She lives in Australia and have to travel to the US for the training they need to help their daughter thrive.

Felicity was diagnosed at 12 months of age and we were told by the doctors and professionals she would never talk and would forever stay in 'her little world' with no hope of us contacting her - ever! They said put her in a 'special school' and maybe they could teach her to 'cope' with the world...

As any parents, or anyone with a child in their life would know - that just wasn't good enough for us, so we searched for a better option and have finally found an amazing program - The Son-Rise Program run by The Autism Treatment Center of America.

We have been working with Felicity in The Son-Rise Program for 2 years now and for the first time in her life she is using words and wanting to engage in social activities with those around her - it's so exciting to watch. She called my hubby Dad for the first time in 7 years just a few weeks ago!!!! take a look HERE at Felicity now. Playing in the backyard with her dad and using her new word 'UP' over and over!

My family and I live in Sydney, Australia and sadly this amazing program is not available here, so we must travel to the United States for the four separate training courses and further development of Felicity's program - but as I'm sure you could understand this is expensive.

We, along with two other families with Autistic children, Hannah and Blake, are holding a HUGE, Masquerade Ball fundraising event - Behind The Mask Of Autism - in mid November this year and would love if we could get your help! We are asking that you please consider donating something in the form of a item that we can include into a themed (kids, ladies, men's etc etc) hamper/basket from to be auctioned on the night and help us in creating a night 'not to be missed' for our special children.

I have a 'Press Pack' with further details on the event, the children you would be helping and their Program for you to understand exactly what an amazing gift you would be giving. I'd be more than happy to forward this on to anyone interested - just email me at giggleberry@bigpond.com.

Your stores will be mentioned on the night and will be in a 'take home' pack that all who come will receive as well as being mentioned in local papers who are doing both pre and post articles about the event. Please feel free to contact me with any further questions. All of the three families and I thank you in advance for your consideration.

Yours Sincerely,
Amy

Call for Artists & Shops!

Do you have a shop or gallery that has involvement with autism, on any level? I have been known to apply 'One-Nighter Jewelry;' the use of jewels applied directly to the skin. Since I am a hairstylist during the day, I love putting things in hair, be that threads, weaving, ornaments, it doesn't matter what it is if it works well...it's all good!

How long have you been creating your craft?
For several years, I have tinkered with neat and shiny bright objects that are wearable on the neck, wrist, ear, feet, or in the hair, even on the dog.
I also love barbed wire, and other interesting mediums. I will explore just about anything that can be utilized into wearable art.

What is one of the biggest lesson you have learnt about your craft & selling it?
The biggest thing I have learned is that sometimes the most creative items are not the ones that sell the most. Like my chosen profession: the extremely creative work has a certain buyer, but the regular work (with creativity) probably has the most buyers.

Which of your items did you have the most fun creating & why?
I really like pushing metal around, pounding it, shaping it. It has been a progression that started with tying, then wore wrapping, evolving into metal working, cold forging. Lately the most enjoyable work has been the creating of a piece for my other team, (eJAG - etsy jewelry artist guild). It does not launch until September 30th so I can't show you or even tell you.... yet. For an update, please refer to my blog where I have been updating since we started the challenge called Autumn Splendor, my entry is named: Fall's Hallow, Aranea.
I also enjoyed making the suite in my Etsy avatar.

Do you have any training in your craft?
I took some jewelry in high school, my most fun was lost wax casting, and the buffer wheel, buffing every darn thing in sight.

Is there a basic ‘household’ item you use when creating that seems to work just as good if not better than the actual ‘tool’?
I have pieces of plastic plumbing pipe in different sizes that I use as shaping dowels. I occasionally use paperclips to hang things. I always have my notebooks of inspiration, doodles, plans, and rough drafts of my listings to transfer to my Word program so that I can later cut and paste.

What is your favourite candy bar & why?
Currently my favorite candy bar is abba-zabba because it blends some flavors. I also enjoy snickers because it is health food :o) -milk, butter, eggs, peanuts, cocoa...what more can you ask for?

If money, responsibilities, and time were no issues where in the great wide world would you go & why?
I would like to go with my husband on our honeymoon, something we've never had a chance to do. The most I have ever been away has been when I had a death in my family and I had to go home (by myself*, hubby stayed home with our daughter) for 3 days. Other than that we do not have support for our daughter so we can get away by ourselves for more than one night and that's only 1 time per year if that much.

If I had a chance to go on my honeymoon with my husband, I would choose Spain or Greece, I would love to see Burma & Afghanistan, but its way too red hot there right now, and probably will be for way too many years to come.

*It felt so good to get away, and yet I felt guilty, that I felt so good.

Not long to wait now....

With a bang the blog has been revived!! As of this week coming we will be running a 'Weekly Featured Artist' spot on the blog. The plan is to feature an Artist or Crafter who has autism somewhere in their life and their work. Some of these people may have ASD or have a family member affected by it, they may be someone who works with an individual on the spectrum or some one who raises funds and or awareness for the Autism Spectrum.
We will be asking things like "Do you have any training in your craft?" and the really important questions like "What is your favorite candy bar?" - a bit of fun and a great way for us to get to know the artist out there with Autism in mind!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__MQu7RISPUQ/SNQvEDEllpI/AAAAAAAAAWc/gQTa_eZYzjM/s400/question-mark.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247871212383999634" />

Stay tuned for our lucky first feature in only a few days!!

I just love this pic!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__MQu7RISPUQ/SNA5-6BenZI/AAAAAAAAAU4/pBAe9gGqZL4/s400/Autism_Awareness_by_thisfleshavenge.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246757318776757650" />

Like the post title says... I love this pic! My little girl, Felicity, is 8 next month and has severe autism. We are 2 years into running her Son-Rise Program and she is moving forward in leaps and bounds and amazing us daily!! I'm sure she is teaching us more than we are teaching her and one of those lessons is... LOVE! No matter how far she comes or doesn't come we love her to bits and think she is a blessing to us! that's why I think this picture is so great!!
